Get twitching. Everyone in the North Devon farm accommodation group will be set to take part in the Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend 25th – 26th January. You too can become part of the world’s biggest wildlife survey that has grown since it started in 1973. This year there is a live bird counter on the new RSPB website which now includes other wildlife counts. Its takes one hour. The more people watching the better so make it a family and friends affair. Here’s how:
1. Where: From your garden or go to the park.
2. Record: the highest number of each bird species you see at the same time – not the total as some birds will revisit the same spot. Take photos and identify – if unknown record unknown and give a description.
3. Count only the birds that land in your garden and not flying overhead.
4. After an hour send in your results. Then start to think of other wildlife seen in the garden this and last year and make a list. Send in.
5. Enter your results at http://www.rspb.org.uk/birdwatch
Look out for the poor little House Sparrow which is in serious decline.
IMPORTANT Put out birdfeeders and fat balls throughout winter…every bird in the winter loses 5% of its body weight overnight – and needs early morning and late evening feeds. You will be rewarded with revisits of your garden visitors.
Good Luck everyone or is that ‘Good Look’
